| What is a stroke and what's another name for it? | Blood supply to areas of the brain becomes interrupted leading to ischemia. Cerebrovascular accident(CVA). |
| What are the two types of strokes? Which type is more common? | Ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic is more common. Impossible to fully tell the difference without a CT scan. |
| What happens in a ischemic stroke? | Similar to a heart attack, a blood vessel becomes blocked and tissue distal to the clot becomes ischemic and eventual death. |
| What happens in a hemorrhagic stroke? | Hemmorhagic stroke's are bleeding within the cranium. |
| If a patient complains having a severe headache, possibly the worst of their lives and later cannot speak, is not easily aroused and show signs of increased ICP. What should you suspect? | A hemorrhagic stroke. |
| What is a TIA and what does it stand for? | An episode of cerebral ischemia without any permanent damage, presents the same as a stroke, but symptoms resolve themselves within 24 hrs. Transient ischemic attack. |
| What is a TIA a warning sign for? | A stroke. More than one-third of TIAs will lead to a full stroke soon afterward. |
| What is the number one preventable cause of strokes and TIAs? | Hypertension |
| What does FAST stand for? What should you look for in each step? | Face, arms, speech, time. Facial drooping, especially in one section or side Arm weakness, inability to raise the arm Slurred speech, struggles to talk or not being able to talk at all. Time: < 6 hours or woke up with symptoms? |
| What does VAN stand for? What should you look for in each step? | Vision, Aphasia, Neglect. Right or left gaze affected? Naming difficulties? Ignoring left side of the body? |
| What transporting a stroke patient 3 quarters prone, how should they be oriented? | The soggy side of their face should be facing down. |
| What is the management of a stroke patient? | ABCs, oxygen, stroke assessment, protect impaired limbs, RTC |
| What is true about stroke presentation? What are some signs and symptoms of a stroke? | Symptoms vary depending on the location of the stroke. DLOC, slurred speech, confusion, aphasia, sudden vision changes, unilateral weakness/paralysis, facial droop, loss of coordination, hypertension and sudden headache. |
| What is a hot stroke? | When the signs and symptoms of a stroke's onset is less than 6 hours. |
| What does unilateral weakness rule out in regards to stroke assessment? | Alcohol intoxication and concussion. |
