What is decolonization? The process where colonies gained independence from European empires, mostly after World War II
Why did decolonization increase after WWII? European powers were weakened economically and militarily, and independence movements grew stronger
What is nationalism in the context of decolonization? A belief that people in a colony should govern themselves and form their own nation
What role did the United Nations play in decolonization? It supported self-determination, encouraging colonies to become independent
Who was Mohandas Gandhi? Leader of India’s independence movement who used nonviolent resistance
What is civil disobedience? Deliberately refusing to follow unjust laws through nonviolent actions
What was Gandhi’s Salt March? A protest against British salt taxes where Indians made their own salt
What is Satyagraha? Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance to injustice
What major change happened in India in 1947? India gained independence from Britain and was partitioned into India and Pakistan
What was the Partition of India? The division of British India into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan
What was a major effect of the Partition? Mass migration and violent conflict between Hindus and Muslims
Who was Jawaharlal Nehru? Leader of the Indian National Congress and first Prime Minister of India
What was the Indian National Congress? A political group that led the movement for Indian independence
What was the British Raj? Period of British colonial rule over India
Why was Africa colonized by European powers? To gain raw materials, markets, and political power during imperialism
What was the Scramble for Africa? Rapid colonization of Africa by European countries in the late 1800s
Why did African independence movements grow after WWII? European powers were weakened and nationalist movements increased
Who was Kwame Nkrumah? Leader of Ghana’s independence movement and first president of Ghana
Why is Ghana important in African decolonization? It was the first Sub-Saharan African colony to gain independence in 1957
What is one major problem after African independence? Civil wars and political instability
Why did conflicts often occur in newly independent African countries? Colonial borders ignored ethnic and cultural divisions
What is a similarity between India and African decolonization? Both were driven by nationalism and desire for self-rule
What is a difference between India and many African independence movements? India was mostly nonviolent, while Africa often involved armed struggle
What is self-determination? The right of people to choose their own government and future
How did WWII contribute to decolonization? It weakened European empires and encouraged independence movements worldwide
What is one long-term effect of decolonization? New nations gained independence but many faced political and economic instability
