Who was Jean-Jacques Rousseau? An Enlightenment philosopher who believed government should be based on the will of the people and the social contract.
What is Rousseau's most famous work? The Social Contract (1762).
What is the social contract? An agreement in which people give up some individual freedoms in exchange for protection and the benefits of living in society.
According to Rousseau, where does government get its power? From the people, not from kings or divine right.
What did Rousseau believe about laws passed by the majority? The majority rules, and everyone must obey those laws even if they voted against them.
Which idea did Rousseau oppose? Absolute monarchy and the divine right of kings.
How did Rousseau influence history? His ideas inspired the French Revolution and later democratic governments.
Regents clue: "Government should reflect the general will of the people." Think Rousseau.
