What is a litigious society? A society where people frequently sue health care providers when outcomes are unacceptable
What is a plaintiff? The person bringing a lawsuit
What is a defendant? The person or party being sued
What is precedent? Past court decisions that guide future cases (case law)
What is a law? A rule of conduct enforced by an authority
What is summary judgment? A court decision made without a trial because there is no significant dispute of facts
What are ethics? Standards of behavior regarding right and wrong beyond the law
What are moral values? Beliefs shaped by family, culture, and society that guide behavior
What are codes of ethics? Rules created to guide behavior and maintain standards in a profession
What is the Hippocratic Oath? A pledge physicians take to practice medicine ethically
What is bioethics? The study of ethical issues in medicine and biological research
Name one issue in bioethics Human experimentation
Name another bioethical issue Organ transplants and fairness in allocation
What is a concern with genetic research? Possible discrimination and ethical use
What do bioethicists do? Help professionals make difficult ethical decisions
What is etiquette? Good manners

What is courtesy? Practicing good manners
