QuestionAnswer
Simile Comparison between two subjects using like or as (The tree was as tall as a tower)
Metaphor Comparing between two subjects not using like or as (The man has a heart of gold)
Juxtaposition Two ideas or more, placed side by side for comparing (A student who gets 100s on all of their test sitting next to someone failing)
Alliteration The repeating of initial and stressed sounds at the beginning of words (Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore)
Allusion A reference to a famous person place or event (He is a regular Einstein)
Foreshadowing When an author provides hints or clues to what will happen in a story (Captain America tell Iron man he is not the type of person to make a sacrificial play, while Iron man eventually sacrifices himself during avengers end game)
Hyperbole An exaggeration or overstatement (My bag weighs a ton!)
Idiom The overall meaning of words is different from the meaning of individual words (Cost an arm and a leg)
Irony The opposite of what is to be expected (A pilot has a fear of heights)
Imagery Describing words or phrases by bring a certain image into the mind of the reader (Trees with green leafs and dark red trunks surrounded him)
Onamatopoeia Words imitating sounds (Bang! Pow! Bam!)
Oxymoron A combination of contradictory terms (Jumbo Shrimp)
Personification Human features given to a non human object (The teddy bear started speaking to me)
Repetition The repeating of words and phrases to emphasize a point (Time after time)
Symbolism Where an object represents an idea (The eagle represents freedom to the United States)
