| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| chance | the occurrence of events in the absence of obvious intention, cause, or design |
| compound event | an event associated with a multi-step action |
| event | a single outcome of group of outcomes from a sample space |
| experimental probability | calculated by repeating an experiment many time and using the ratio "number of times event occurs"/"total number of trials" |
| outcome | a possible result of an action |
| probability | the mathematical study of how likely something is to happen, measured on a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain) |
| probability model | consists of an action, its sample space, and a list of events with their probabilities |
| random number generator | a device or algorithm that produces a sequence of numbers or symbols that lack any predictable pattern |
| relative frequency | "number of times an event occurs"/"total number of trials |
| sample space | the set of all possible outcomes of that action |
| simulation | a model of a real-world situation that is used to find probabilities |
| theoretical probability | "number of favorable outcomes"/"number of possible outcomes" |
| tree diagram | a visual tool used to break down complex information, decisions, or probabilities into a clear, hierarchical structure |
| data | pieces of information collected by asking questions, measuring, or making observations about the real world |
| decimal | a number with one or more places to the right of the decimal point |
| diagram | a simplified, visual representation of information, structures, or processes |
| equivalent | having the same value, meaning, or effect, even if the forms look different |
| estimate | to find a number that is close to an exact answer |
| estimation | the process of using sample data to approximate unknown population parameters such as the mean, variance, or proportion |
| fraction | a number that can be written in the form a/b, where a is a whole number and b is a number greater than zero |
| frequency | describes the number of times a specific value occurs in a data set |
| inference | a judgement made by interpreting data |
| model | to represent a situation using pictures, diagrams, or number sequences |
| proportion | an equation stating that two ratios are equal |
| proportional reasoning | the ability to understand and manipulate ratios, fractions, and percentages to calculate the likelihood of an event occurring |
| ratio | a relationship in which for every x units of one quantity there are y units of another quantity |
| trial | a single performance such as a flip of a coin |
