| infer | the act of making a judgment by interpreting data |
| informal comparative inferences | data-based predictions or generalizations that contrast two or more populations without relying on formal, complex mathematical formulas |
| population | the complete set of items being studied` |
| qualitative inferences | drawing categorical conclusions such as presence/absence or directions rather than estimating exact numerical parameters |
| random sample | in this sample, each member in the population has an equal chance of being selected |
| representative sample | a sample of a population in which the number of subjects in the sample with the trait that you are studying is proportional to the number of members in the population with that trait |
| sample | It is part of the population you want to study when you do not have the resources to study every member of the population |
| valid inference | an inference that is true about the population |
| box plot | a statistical graph that shows the distribution of a data set by marking five boundary points where data occur along a number line but does not show frequency |
| cluster | a group of points that lie close together on a scatter plot |
| data | pieces of information collected by asking questions, measuring, or making observations about the real world |
| distribution | describes the way that the data values are spread out over all possible values |
| dot plot | a statistical graph that shows the shape of a data set with stacked dots above each data value on a number line. |

| mode | the item, or items, in a data set that occurs most frequently |
| proportion | an equation stating that two ratios are equal |
| proportional reasoning | the cognitive ability to compare, analyze, and interpret numerical data using ratios, fractions and percentages rather than raw quantities |
| quartile | one of four equal parts of a data set |
| range | the difference between the greatest and least values in a data set |
| ratio | a relationship in which for every x units of one quantity there are y units of another quantity |
| statistical measure | quantitative values used to summarize, describe, and interpret the characteristics of a data set |
| statistical question | a question that investigates an aspect of the real world and can have variety in the responses |
| survey | a method of gathering information from a subset of a population to make inferences, draw conclusions or make predictions about the entire population |
| valid | refers to how accurately a method, test, or study measures what it is intended to measure |
| mean absolute diviation | a measure of spread that calculates how far, on average, each data point in a set is from the data's mean |
