addition property of equality the same number can be added to both sides of an equation and the sides remain equal

algebraic equation a mathematical sentence that consists of variables, numbers, operation symbols, and an equal sign
algebraic expression a mathematical phrase that consists of variables, numbers, and operation symbols.
area model a visual, rectangular diagram used to solve math problems by breaking numbers down into smaller, more manageable parts.
associative property of addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
bar diagram a way to represent part to whole relationships
coefficient the number part of a term that contains a variable

commutative property of addition a + b = b + a

distributive property a(b + c) = ab + ac
division property of equality both sides of an equation can be divided by the same nonzero number and the sides remain equal
division property of inequality both sides of an inequality can be divided by the same nonzero number and the sides remain equal
equation a mathematical sentence that includes an equal sign to compare two expressions
equivalent expression expressions that always have the same value
expression a mathematical phrase that can involve variables, numbers, and operations
inequality a mathematical sentence that uses less than, less than/equal to, greater than, greater than/equal to, or not equal symbols to compare two quantities
integer the set of positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero
inverse relationships between operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division (except multiplication or division by zero)
like terms terms that have identical variable parts
