algebraic equations a mathematical sentence that consists of variables, numbers, operations symbols, and equal sign
algebraic expressions a mathematical phrase that consists of variables, numbers, and operation symbols.
area model a visual, rectangular diagram used to solve math problems by breaking numbers down into smaller, more manageable parts.
associative property of addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
coefficient the number part of a term that contains a variable
communitive property of addition a + b = b + a
common factors a number which is a factor of two or more given numbers
distributive property a(b + c) = ab + ac
equations a mathematical sentence that includes an equal sign to compare two expressions
equivalent expressions expressions that always have the same value
expression a mathematical phrase than can involve variables, numbers, and operations
integers the set of positive whole numbers, their opposites and zero.
inverse relationship between operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division (except multiplication or division by zero)
like terms terms that have identical variable parts
opposites two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but in opposite directions
positve integer numbers that are greater than zero
properties of operations
rational coefficient a coefficient that can be written as a fraction and the denominator is not zero
rational numbers a number that can be written as a fraction and the denominator is not zero
simplify to rewrite an expression, equation, or fraction into a shorter, less complicated form without changing its overall value
substitute replace the variable with a number
variable a letter that represents an unknown value
