| algebraic expressions | a mathematical phrase that consists of variables, numbers, and operation symbols. |
| area model | a visual, rectangular diagram used to solve math problems by breaking numbers down into smaller, more manageable parts. |
| associative property of addition | (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) |
| coefficient | the number part of a term that contains a variable |
| communitive property of addition | a + b = b + a |
| common factors | a number which is a factor of two or more given numbers |
| distributive property | a(b + c) = ab + ac |
| equations | a mathematical sentence that includes an equal sign to compare two expressions |
| equivalent expressions | expressions that always have the same value |
| expression | a mathematical phrase than can involve variables, numbers, and operations |
| integers | the set of positive whole numbers, their opposites and zero. |
| inverse | relationship between operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division (except multiplication or division by zero) |
| like terms | terms that have identical variable parts |
| opposites | two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but in opposite directions |

| variable | a letter that represents an unknown value |
