| markup | the amount of increase from the cost to the selling price |
| markdown | the amount of decrease from the selling price to the sale price |
| percent change | the percent something increases or decreases from its original measure of amount |
| percent equation | describes the relationship between a part and a whole |
| percent error | describes the accuracy of a measured or estimated value compared to an actual or accepted value |
| percent markdown | the markdown as a percent decrease of the original selling price |
| percent markup | the markup as a percent increase of the original cost |
| principal | the original amount of money deposited or borrowed in an account |
| simple interest | interest paid only on an account's principal |
| bar diagram | a way to represent part to whole relationships |
| constant of proportionality | y over x only if the graph goes through the origin |
| equation | a mathematical sentence that includes an equal sign to compare to expressions |
| equivalent ratios | ratios that express the same relationship |
| expression | a mathematical phrase that can involve variables, numbers, and operations |
| greater than | shows a comparison of two numbers with the number of greater value shown first, or on the left |
| inverse relationships | relationships between operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division (except multiplication or division by 0) |
| less than | shows a comparison of two numbers with the number of lesser value shown first, or on the left |
| negative integer | numbers less than zero |
| opposites | two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but in opposite directions |
| percent | a ratio that compares a number to 100 |
| positive integer | numbers greater than zero |
| proportion | an equation stating that two ratios are equal |
| porportional relationship | when a relationship can be described by equivalent ratios |
| rate | a ratio involving two quantities measured in different units |
| ratio | a relationship in which for every x units of one quantity there are y units of another quantity |
| reciprocal | the relationship of two numbers when their product is 1. |
| tax | a mandatory financial charge computed as a percentage of an item's price or an individuals income |
| unit rate | the rate for one unit of a given quantity |
| variable | a letter that represents an unknown value |
