absolute value always a positive number and refers to the distance of a number from zero
associative property of addition this property states that when performing addition, how numbers are grouped will not change the sum
average another word for mean of a set which is found by adding all the numbers and dividing by the number of numbers
commutative property of addition changing the order of the terms in an expression does not change its value
identity property of addition the sum of any number and zero is the number
integer the set of positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero
negative number numbers less than zero
negative sign a mathematical symbol used to indicate a value less than zero or to indicate the operation of subtraction
operation an action or rule that tells you what to do with one or more numbers
opposite numbers two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but in opposite directions
