Energy: Forces Doing Work

QuestionAnswer
Describe changes involved in the way energy is stored when systems change. Energy is transferred, can be transferred into or away from system, between different objects in the system or between different types of energy stores
What does it mean if there are no energy changes in a closed system? There is no net change to the total energy in that system
How can the energy of a system be changed by forces doing work? (Give example) Box lifted off the floor, work is done against gravity, causes energy to be transferred to boxes kinetic and GPE stores
How can the energy of a system be changed electrical equipment? Transfer energy between energy stores
Give example of this. Toothbrush electric Energy transferred electrically from chemical energy store of battery to kinetic energy store of bristles
How can the energy of a system be changed heating? (Example of pan) Energy transferred into system by heating to the thermal energy stores of the pan and water
How do you measure work done by a force? E = F x d
What is work done equal to and what unit? Energy transferred (J)
How do we work out change in GPE? ∆GPE = m× g ×∆h
How do we work out Kinetic Energy? KE= 1/2 x M x V (Sqaured)
Give an example of energy being dissipated in system changes to get stored in less useful ways. Pushing something on a rough surface means some energy is transferred to thermal energy stores due to friction
How do mechanical processes become wasteful? When they cause a rise in temp, so dissipating energy in heating the surroundings
Define Power. And give Unit The rate at which energy is transferred (Watts)
Give the equation for Power P = E/t
Give power equation in words. Power = Work done/ time
What is 1 watt equal to? 1J/s
Give the equation for efficiency. Useful energy transferred by device / Total energy transferred by device

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
