A-Level Greek

Odyssey 16: 401-425

TermDefinition
"O' friends, I would not want to kill Telemachus: it is a terrible thing to kill a member of a kingly race. But let us first enquire about the plans of the gods.
If the oracles of mighty Zeus approve, I myself shall kill him and order others to: but if the gods turn away, I order you to cease."
Amphinomus spoke as such, and his plan pleased the others. Then, immediately, they stood up and went into the home of Odysseus, and having come they sat upon the polished chairs.
But wise Penelope herself intended to appear among the suitors, having excessive arrogance.
For she had learnt of the (threatened) destruction of her son in the palace: for the herald Medon, who had learnt about the plans, told her. And she went to go to the palace with her attending women.
ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε δὴ μνηστῆρας ἀφίκετο δῖα γυναικῶν, στῆ ῥα παρὰ σταθμὸν τέγεος πύκα ποιητοῖο, But when she, divine among women, arrived among the suitors, she stood beside the doorway of the strongly made hall,
ἄντα παρειάων σχομένη λιπαρὰ κρήδεμνα, Ἀντίνοον δ᾽ ἐνένιπεν ἔπος τ᾽ ἔφατ᾽ ἔκ τ᾽ ὀνόμαζεν: Holding a glistening veil in front of her cheeks, she reproached Antinous with her words, and she spoke and named him out:
"Antinous, having hubris, deviser of evil, and they say that you are the best of those amongst your age in the deme of Ithaca in regard to your counsel and words! But you have not been as such.
Greedy-hearted, why are you sewing together death and (ill) fate for Telemachus, and not caring for your suppliants, whom Zeus is the patron of? Nothing holy, but you sew together evils amongst each other.
ἦ οὐκ οἶσθ᾽ ὅτε δεῦρο πατὴρ τεὸς ἵκετο φεύγων, δῆμον ὑποδείσας; δὴ γὰρ κεχολώατο λίην, Do you not know that your father came here as a fugitive, fearing the people? Indeed, they were very angry,
