Diagnostics Tests and Treatments
| Term | Definition |

| Heart Catheterization | Small tubes are passed into the heart chambers and blood vessels around the heart. (Patient is awake during procedure) |
| Angiogram | During a heart catheterization, dye is injected into the coronary arteries in order to detect blockages in the arteries. |
| Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) | Treatment for blocked arteries that can be performed upon completion of an angiogram. |
| Streptokinase and Tissue Plasminogen Activator (IPA) | Medications that dissolve clots, called thrombolytic agents. |
| Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) | Requires open heart surgery. If PTCA cannot treat blockage, open surgery is necessary |
| Cardioversion | External electrical shocks are applied to a patient in order to correct a cardiac dysrhythmia-usually a rapid heart beat. |

| Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) | Small defibrillator implanted into a patient's chest or abdomen wall that will automatically detect a dangerously fast heartbeat and defibrillate. (Last resort) |
| Pacemaker | A device used in patient's whose heartbeat is too slow. |
| Echocardiogram | Test that uses ultrasonic waves to obtain a picture of the chambers, valves and walls of the heart. |
| EKG | A recording of the electrical impulses that produces the heartbeats. |
