Who were Muckrakers? Investigative journalists and writers who exposed corruption in government, unfair business practices, poor working conditions and unsafe products.
Examples of Muckrakers and what did they do Upton Sinclair, Ida Tarbell, Jacob Riis, Lewis Hine: they were reporters who exposed corruption and social problems about change.
Who were suffragists and what was their goal? Suffragist were people, especially women, who worked to gain the right to vote for women.
What laws were passed to break monopolies and trusts? The Sherman Antitrust Act-Made it illegal for businesses to form monopolies or trusts that limited competition. Clayton Antitrust Act-Strengthened the Sherman Antitrust At by more clearly defining and banning unfair business practices related to monopoly
What was the 19th Amendment? Women gained the right to vote
What was the Jungle by Upton Sinclair about? The Jungle exposed poor working conditions and unsanitary practices in the meatpacking industry, leading to important food safety reforms.
What laws were passed after the Jungle? The Meat Inspection Act--required government inspections of meatpacking plants and ensured meat was processed under sanitary. Pure Food and Drug Act--Prohibited the sale of contaminated or mislabeled food and medicines and helped protect consumers.
Direct Primary Voters choose their party's candidates directly, rather than party leaders choosing them.
Recall Voters can remove an elected official from office before their term ends.
Referendum Voters can vote directly on a proposed law
Initiative Citizens can propose a new law and put it on the ballot for a vote.
Direct Primary, recall, referendum, initiative -- how did these reforms expand democracy. These reforms expanded democracy by giving ordinary citizen a greater voice in choosing leaders, making laws, and holding government officials accountable.
What was Teddy Roosevelt's role during the Progressive Era? Teddy Roosevelt's role in the Progressive Era was breaking up monopolies/trusts, protecting consumers by supporting food and drug safety laws, conserving natural resources by creating nation Parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. And "Square Deal"
