| Volume | the amount of space matter takes up |
| Atom | the basic unit of matter; a tiny particle |
| Molecule | made up of two or more atoms joined by chemical bonds |
| Compound | made up of two or more DIFFERENT types of atoms joined together by chemical bonds |

| Indefinite | can and does change |
| Solid | matter in which the particles are packed together, have a fixed arrangement, and the particles vibrate in place. They have a definite shape and definite volume. |
| Arrangement | pattern |
| Vibrate | move in place |
| Liquid | matter in which particles are far apart, have not set arrangement, and the particles move around and past each other. Definite volume, but indefinite shape. |
