Manifest Destiny belief that the US was destined by God to expand and spread democracy
Imperialism policy where stronger, powerful country takes control of weaker, smaller country's land, economy and government

Urbanization rapid growth of cities, mostly driven by movement of people
Tenement crowded, poorly constructed wooden apartment building where immigrants lived
Chinese Exclusion Act US law passed in 1882 that banned Chinese laborers from immigrating to US for over 50 years
Quota legal limit placed on number of immigrants allowed to enter a country from specific nations
Union organization of workers formed to protect their rights and push for better pay, shorter hours, and better conditions
Strike protest when workers went against their owners to demand better conditions
Lockout tactic used by factory owners to stop workers from entering jobs during a dispute
Collective Bargaining when Union representatives and factory owners sit and negotiate terms
Arbitration settling a dispute where a neutral third party acts as judge to make final decision
Yellow Journalism style of exaggerated, biased newspaper in order to sway people's opinions
Muckrakers journalists during Progressive Era who exposed corruption, poverty, and dangerous corporate practices
