| Term | Definition |

| 1. Alliteration | the repetition of initial and stressed sounds at the beginning of words or in accented syllables. Example: sally sold some sea shells |
| 2. Allusion: | A reference to a famous person, place, event or work of literature. example: Olivia Rodrigo |
| 3. Foreshadowing: | a suggestion of what is to come later in a work by giving hints and clues. Example: saying imagine the power goes out and later the power goes out. |
| 4. Hyperbole: | a figure of speech -- an exaggeration or overstatement. Example: I'm so hungry I could eat 1 million burgers. |
| 5. Imagery | used to describe the words or phrases which bring forth a certain picture or image in the mind of the reader. Imagery appeals to the senses- what can be seen, heard, felt, etc. example: I felt the warm bright sun shining over my face. |
| 6. Irony: | something is the opposite of what you would expect, often in a funny or unexpected way. Example: looking outside seeing a storm and saying oh what a lovely day to go to the beach. |
| 7. Juxtaposition: | placing two contrasting images, concepts, ideas next to each other for the purpose of comparison to highlight the differences. Example: There was a dark but bright sky. |
| 8. Metaphor | a comparison between two subjects without using “like or “as.” Example: Life is a roller coaster |
| 9. Mood: | The feeling or atmosphere the writer creates in the mind of the reader. Example: happy |
| 10. Personification | a figure of speech in which human qualities are assigned to non-human things, or life is given to inanimate objects. Example: the table cried, |
| 11. Pun | a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings. Example: I used to be a banker, but I lost interest |
| 12. Repetition: | the repeating of a word or phrase to create a rhythm or emphasize a point. Example: AH AH AH |
| 13. Simile: | A comparison between two objects using the words “like” or “as”. Example: she was as brave as a lion |
| 14. Symbol: | A device in literature where an object represents an idea. Example: letters sent back and forth to Caitlin and Martin |
| 15. Theme: | main or central idea or message in a work of literature. This message is usually about life, society or human nature. Example: Generosity and kindness are powerful and can impact not only your life but others lives too. |
