Gross Anatomy

Directional Terms and Body Planes

ConceptDefinition
Superior Situated above (used sparingly in veterinary medicine for some structures of the head)
Inferior Situated below (used sparingly in veterinary medicine for some structures of the head)
manus forelimb
pes hindlimb
Pronation Lateral rotation of manus or pes so that palmar or plantar surface transitions from upward facing (facing the sky), to downward facing (facing the ground)
Supination Medial rotation of manus or pes so that palmar or plantar surface transitions from downward facing (facing the ground), to upward (facing the sky)
Median or Midsagittal A plane that divides the body equal into right and left halves along a longitudinal line.
Paramedian or Sagittal A plane that divides the body into unequal right and left halves along a longitudinal line.
Transverse A plane separating the trunk of the body or the limbs, running perpendicular to the long axis of the trunk, tail or limbs (front half from back half)
Ipsilateral on same side of body
contralateral opposite side of body
Axis a longitudinal line bisecting the limb; passes between digits III and IV
Axial describes a point near the axis of the limb
Abaxial refers to a point away from the axis of the limb
(T/F) Axial and Abaxial are terms used only for the True
adduction the movement of a body part toward the midline of the body
abduction the movement of a limb or body part away from the midline of the body
raphe seam-like union where two lateral (symmetrical) halves of a body part or organ merge
ramus refers to a projecting part, elongated process, or branch of a bone, nerve, or blood vessel
rete an anatomical network of intersecting blood vessels, nerve fibers, or tubular structures
cleido- refers to the clavicle (collarbone)
omo- pertains to the shoulder or scapula
supra- "above," "over," or "beyond"
infra- "below" or "beneath"
epi- "on," "upon," "over," or "outer"
