Medical Abbreviation

Intensive Care unit (ICU)- A specialized hospital department for patients with life threatening illnesses or injuries Ex: Severe decline from stroke or sepsis. Trauma or life support
Labor and Delivery (L&D)- A specialized hospital department where expectant mothers are cared for during labor, childbirth and recovery. Ex: Active labor. After care for mother and baby.
Emergency Room/Department (ER/ED)- A hospital department to treat acute life-threatening or severe illnesses requiring immediate attention. Ex: Chest pain or Shortness of Breath (SOB)
Preoperative (Pre-op)- The care before surgery Ex: Health and medication review. Diagnostic testing or labs.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)- A specialized hospital department where patients are taken after surgery for recovery also known as "the recovery room". Ex: Vital sign (VS) monitoring, pain management and complication preventions.
Postoperative (Post-op)- The care following a surgical procedure "after care". Ex: Monitoring pain management, Vital signs (VS) and/or wound healing.
As needed (PRN)- A medication/treatment that is administered only when necessary. Ex: John Doe may take Tylenol every 4-6 hours by mouth (PO) PRN for pain.
Once a day (QD)- A medication/treatment administered once every 24 hours. Ex: Complete wound care to (R) right foot QD.
Twice a day (BID)- A medication/treatment administered twice a day. Ex: Please give Eliquis 5mg by mouth (PO) BID.
Three times a day (TID)- A medication/treatment administered three times a day. Ex: Please obtain vital signs (VS) TID.
