Earth in Space Study Guide: Phases of the Moon, Seasons, and Eclipses

QuestionAnswer
Axis An imaginary line that runs through Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole; Earth spins around this line.
Axial Tilt The angle at which Earth's axis leans (about 23.5 degrees); this tilt causes seasons.
Eclipse When one object in space blocks the light from another object, creating a shadow on Earth or the moon.
Lunar Eclipse When Earth moves between the sun and moon, and Earth's shadow falls on the moon, making the moon appear dark or reddish.
Solar Eclipse When the moon moves between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's light and casting a shadow on Earth.
Moon Phase The different shapes the moon appears to have as it orbits Earth; caused by how much of the lit side we can see.
New Moon The phase when the moon is between Earth and the sun; the moon is not visible from Earth.
Full Moon The phase when Earth is between the sun and moon; we see the entire lit side of the moon.
Waxing When the moon appears to be growing larger each night (RIGHT SIDE ILLUMINATED)
Waning When the moon appears to be shrinking each night (LEFT SIDE ILLUMINATED)
Revolution The movement of one object around another (Earth revolves around the sun; the moon revolves
Rotation When an object spins on its axis (Earth rotates once every 24 hours).
Equinox A day when day and night are about equal length; happens twice a year (spring and fall).
Umbra The darkest part of a shadow during an eclipse.
Penumbra The lighter outer part of a shadow during an eclipse.
Solstice A day when one hemisphere receives the most sunlight (summer solstice) or least sunlight (winter solstice).
