What are the 3 sections of the country in the 1800s? How were they different from one another? North,South, and West
How did sectional differences (sectionalism) lead to conflicts in the United States? Slave state, Economic differences, Cotton
Why did the slave system become so important in the south but not in the north? It became so important because the slaves made cotton and the North benefited off of it to produce and manufacture in factories.
How did westward expansion and the settlement of new territories lead to conflict between the north and the south? It was the Louisiana Territory and there was a conflict between determining if it was a free state or a slave state to count in population. Also, to maintain the balance.
Why was it so important to keep a “balance” in Congress between slave and non-slave states? So it can be equal in vote.
What was the Missouri Compromise? It allowed Missouri(Slave state) and Maine(Free state) into union . 3630 Line Slavery was outlined and slavery was allowed. They needed(Congress) one state to be free and one state to be a slave state to keep the balance in the compromise.
Missouri Compromise (1820) Missouri is admitted as a slave state but territory north of the 36 30’N latitude line was declared free. Slavery is banned in that northern territory.
What was the Compromise of 1850? New land gained from Mexico is admitted as slave territory California is admitted as a free state Slave trade banned in district of Columbia Strong Fugitive (runaway) Slave Law is passed
How did the Kansas-Nebraska Act lead to “Bleeding Kansas?” in 1854, Congress introduced a law that allowed settlers in these two states to vote on whether they wanted slavery or not. This resulted in killing and bloodshed between those favoring and opposing slavery. This became known as Bleeding Kansas.
What did the Dred Scott decision say? Why was this such an important decision and a cause of the Civil War? In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress could not prohibit slavery in any of the new territories. The Court argued that slaves were property, and that Congress had no right to take away a slave holder’s property.

Why is the election of 1860 considered a direct cause of the outbreak of the Civil War? Abraham Lincoln was so against slavery and the South was not happy. He wanted to abolish slavery.
Why did the south secede from the Union? They seceded because they were all slave states and did not like when Abraham Lincoln got elected because he wanted to abolish slavery.
What happened at Fort Sumter? A battle
What was Lincoln’s most important goal in fighting the Civil War? He wanted to abolish slavery.
How does the war come to an end? The North won because there isn't slavery today.
