| Simile | A direct comparison of two different objects (uses like or as). |
| Metaphor | A statement in which two objects are being indirectly compared (uses is). |
| Imagery | The use of language to describe something that appeals to the five senses. |
| Symbolism | The use of an object to represent a concept. |
| Personification | Giving human attributes to nonhuman objects. |
| Hyperbole | An exaggerated description or statement |
| Foreshadowing | When authors hint at plot developments that occur later in the story. |
| Mood | The feeling the work evokes in the reader |
| Setting | Where and when a story takes place |
| Characterization | The representation of the traits of a character |
| Point of View | The perspective that the narrator holds in relation to the events of the story |
| Central Idea | A broad, universal message or lesson. (bumper sticker) |
| Tone | The general character or attitude conveyed in a piece of writing |
| Protagonist | The main character who drives the plot |
| Antagonist | The opposing character, force or circumstance that creates a conflict and opposes the protagonist's goal |
| conflict | A struggles between two opposing forces |
| resolution | The part of the plot where the conflict has ended or was solved |
