Disaster when the hazard actually causes damage and impacts people
What causes earthquakes? Movement of tectonic plates.
Why do volcanoes form? Magma rises through Earth’s crust, often at plate boundaries.
What are tectonic plates? Large pieces of Earth’s crust that slowly move.
Where is the Ring of Fire located? Around the Pacific Ocean.
Why is it so active? Because many tectonic plate boundaries are located there.
What causes hurricanes? Warm ocean water and rising air that creates a spinning storm system.
What is a storm surge? Ocean water pushed onto land during a hurricane.
When do hurricanes usually occur? Late summer and fall.
What causes floods? Heavy rain, overflowing rivers, or storm surge.
Where do tornadoes happen most often? Tornado Alley in the central United States.
What is a landslide? Movement of rock and soil down a slope.
How do scientists predict hazards? Using satellites, weather radar, seismographs, and past data patterns.
How do engineers reduce damage? By designing earthquake-resistant buildings and warning systems.
Why is preparation important? It saves lives and reduces damage.
