The Southern Colonies

TermDefinition
Jamestown First English settlement in America in 1607, with the intent of locating gold and silver.
John Smith English colonist who helped establish the Jamestown colony and convinced the settlers to work harder and build better shelter in exchange for food.
Pocahontas Indigenous woman of the Powhatan tribe who saved John Smith’s life and later moved to England.
Indentured Servants A person who received free passage to North America if they signed a contract to work without pay for a certain period of time.
Bacon’s Rebellion An armed conflict between lower-class frontiersmen and the governor of Virginia because of land access, unfair taxes, and policies concerning interactions with Native Americans.
Toleration Act of 1649 Passed by Maryland, this law was the first that guaranteed religious freedom in America.
Olaudah Equiano African author and abolitionist who gained his freedom from slavery and wrote the autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, which was one of the earliest firsthand accounts about the horrors of enslavement.
Slave Codes Cruel laws that the colonists used to control the people they enslaved.
