Unit 6 vocab
Chem
| Asymmetrical molecule | a molecule with unequal amount of sharing |
| Bent | when central atoms has 1 or more lone pairs |
| Binary compound | a compound made of 2 substances |
| covalent bond | a bond where atoms share electrons causing different types of attractions |
| diatomic molecule | a molecule made of 2 atoms bonded together |
| dipole | a slight positive of a negative charge by unequal sharing of electrons |
| dipole dipole force | when positive end of one polar molecule is attracted to the negative side of another |
| dipole induced dipole force | when a molecule with permanent dipole and a region of partial negative approaches a non polar molecule |
| double covalent bond | 2 bonds formed in an atom that shows 2 pairs of electrons |
| hydrogen bond | strongest type of dipole dipole attraction and its when hydrogen bonds with N.O.F |
| intermolecular forces | how molecules interact between molecules |
| ionic bond | a bond between electrons and its where they are transferred |
| Linear | when atoms are arranged in a line with a bond of 180 |
| vapor pressure | the pressure created when molecules at the surface of a liquid escape to be a gas |
| van der Waals forces | weaker IMF that occur by temporary shifts in electrons that produce momentary dipoles |
| triple covalent bond | a bond that shares 3 pairs of electrons |
| Tetrahedral | 4 atoms bonded to a central atom evenly spread out to be far away |
| symmetrical molecule | a molecule where electrons are shared evenly |
| pyramidal | 3 sided pyramid where central atom is at the top and 3 sided of bonds at base |
| polar | unequal sharing of electrons (ushally between 2 diff atoms) |
| nonpolar | unequal sharing of electrons (ushally between 2 of same atoms) |
| multiple covalent bond | when there a many different bonds occuring to an atom |
| molecule/molecular | 2 or more atoms covalently bonded |
| metallic bond | the attraction between positive metal ions in the sea of electrons |
| London dispersion forces | weaker IMF that occur by temp shifts in electrons that produces momentary dipoles |
