Common Terms

| 1. Abrasion | A cut or scrape that typically isn’t serious. |
| 2. Abscess | A tender, fluid-filled pocket that forms in tissue, usually due to infection. |
| 3. Acute | A condition that begins suddenly and is usually short in duration. |
| 4. Ambulatory | Medical care given to people who can walk in and out on their own; often same-day care. |
| 5. Anemia | A condition caused by low iron levels or too few healthy red blood cells, often causing tiredness and weakness. |
| 6. Angina | Chest pain that may be caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. |
| 7. Antibiotic | Medicine that fights bacteria. |
| 8. Anti-inflammatory | A drug that reduces swelling. |
| 9. Antiviral | Medicine that fights viruses. |
| 10. Benign | Not dangerous or not cancerous. |
| 11. Biopsy | Taking a small sample of tissue for examination and testing. |
| 12. Bradycardia | A slower-than-normal heartbeat. |
| 13. Catheter | A small tube passed through part of the body, such as through the urethra to empty the bladder. |
| 14. Cell | The tiny building blocks that make up the organs and tissues of the body. |
| 15. Cancer | A disease of the cells. |
| 16. Cervical screening | An internal swab test to check whether the cervix is healthy. |
| 17. Cervix | The entrance or neck of the womb at the top of the vagina. |
| 18. Cholesterol | A group of blood fats, including HDL and LDL. |
| 19. Chronic | A long-term or persistent condition. |
| 20. Comorbidity | Having two or more diseases or conditions at the same time. |
| 21. Complications | Problems that develop after an operation, treatment, or illness. |
| 22. Conception | When an egg is fertilized by sperm and begins to grow in the womb. |
| 23. Contusion | A bruise. |
| 24. Contraception | Birth control used to help prevent pregnancy. |
| 25. Defibrillator | A medical device that uses electric shocks to restore a normal heartbeat. |
| 26. Edema | Swelling caused by fluid buildup. |
| 27. Embolism | A blockage in a blood vessel, often caused by a clot. |
| 28. Epidermis | The outer layer of the skin. |
| 29. Fracture | A broken bone or cartilage. |
| 30. Gland | An organ or tissue that produces and secretes fluids for a specific function. |
| 31. Hypertension | High blood pressure. |
| 32. Hypotension | Low blood pressure. |
| 33. Inpatient | A patient who stays in the hospital overnight or longer. |
| 34. Intravenous | Medication or fluid delivered into a vein. |
| 35. Irrigate | To clean part of the body by flushing it with fluid. |
| 36. Lesion | Abnormal tissue change caused by injury or disease. |
| 37. Malignant | Cancerous. |
| 38. Noninvasive | A procedure that does not require instruments to be inserted into the body. |
| 39. Outpatient | A patient who receives treatment without staying overnight in the hospital. |
| 40. Polyp | A small growth in the lining of the bowel. |
| 41. Prognosis | The likely or expected outcome of a disease or treatment. |
| 42. Relapse | The return of disease or symptoms after improvement. |
| 43. Remission | A decrease or disappearance of disease symptoms. |
| 44. Subcutaneous | Under the skin. |
| 45. Sutures | Stitches used to join tissues together as they heal. |
| 46. Terminal | An illness that cannot be cured and is likely fatal. |
| 47. Topical | Medicine applied to the skin. |
| 48. Transplant | Moving an organ or tissue from one body to another. |
| 49. Vaccine | A substance that stimulates immunity against disease. |
| 50. Zoonotic disease | A disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. |
