Acids and Alkalis

TermDefinition
Base pH 8-14, neutralises an acid
Soluble bases (Alkali) Metal hydroxide
Insoluble bases Metal oxide and metal carbonate
HCL Hydrochloric acid
HNO₃ Nitric acid
H₂SO₄ Sulfuric acid
Neutralisation Reaction where acid and alkali (base) form salt and water
pH scale A 0–14 scale showing how acidic or alkaline a solution is.
Corrosive A dsubstance that can damage skin, metals, or materials.
Irritant A substance that can cause redness or discomfort to skin or eyes but is not corrosive.
Universal Indicator A mixture of dyes that shows a full range of pH colours from strong acid to strong alkali. red-acid, green-neutral, purple-alkali
Red cabbage indicator A natural indicator made from red cabbage that changes colour depending on pH. red-acid, purple-neutral, green-alkali
Litmus Indicator, red-acid, purple-neutral, blue-alkali
Acid A substance with a pH less than 7 that tastes sour and can react with metals and bases, always contains hydrogen
Alkali A substance with a pH greater than 7 can neutralise acids and are contained in most cleaning products.
Edible Salt Sodium chloride
Naming Salt Base and acid (sulfat, nitrate, chloride)
pH probe Electronic device when put in a substance will give a numerical answer showing if it is acidic or alkaline.
Acid + base Acid + base (alkali, metal oxide)-> salt + water
Acid + carbonate Acid + carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide
Base pH 8-14, neutralises an acid
Soluble bases (Alkali) Metal hydroxide

How to make salt crystals Measure acid into beaker Add copper oxide Add until excess Filter mixture Remove excess solid Heat filtrate gently Use Bunsen + tripod Leave to evaporate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
