*Enteral nutrition is delivery of nutrients through a tube feeding
*Food tolerance is difficulty digesting a particular food causing symptoms such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea (does not involve immune system)
*Full liquid diet consists or the patient consuming liquids that are thicker than clear such as soup, milk, cream, pudding, ice cream (dairy based)
*Gastric decompression is the removal of air, fluids, or gastric contents from the stomach using a tube to relieve pressure and distention
Hemoglobin A1c is a blood test that measures the average blood glucose levels over approx. the last 2-3 months (less than 7% is good)
Hyperglycemia need a doctors order to treat (typically insulin) True (High blood glucose levels and is abnormal)
*Hypoglycemia usually do not need a doctors order typically just feed them True (Low blood glucose levels and is abnormal)
*Jejunostomy tube (J-Tube) is a tube inserted into the stomach to the small intestines
*Mechanical soft diet consists of foods that are softened, grounded, chopped, or mashed to make chewing easier ( patients with chewing issues, missing teeth, jaw problems, poorly fitting dentures, or weak and fatigue)
*Nasogastric tube is a tube placed through the nose into the stomach for feedings, medications, and gastric decompression
*NPO means nothing by mouth
*Parenteral nutrition is delivery of nutrients directly into the bloodstream through IV bypassing the gastrointestinal tract
*Partial parenteral nutrition (PPN) is IV nutrient that provides some but not all nutritional meals through the peripheral vein (smaller vein-goes directly into the vein to patient blood stream
*Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (PEG) is a tube inserted into the abdominal wall directly into the stomach with endoscopic guidance
*Pureed diet consists of processed foods in a food blender or food processor (texture is thicker than full liquid diet but still swallowed easier)
*Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is IV nutrients that provide all required nutrients through an central venous catheter (larger vein)
*If you see "as tolerated" in the doctor order this means the nurse can make changes based on what the patient tells them without a doctors order
*PPN and TPN require sterile technique True

*Common signs of Hyperglycemia are Polyuria, Polydipsia, Blurred Vision, Death, Confusion, Headache, Hot, Fruity-Smell, Coma
*Common signs of Hypoglycemia are Sweating, Shakiness, Confusion, Irritability, Seizure/Unconsciousness, Clammy Skin, Nausea, Dizziness Headaches, Weakness/Fatigue

Which feeding tube goes into the small intestines? J-Tube
Which nutritional method uses the GI tract? Enteral nutrition
Which nutrition method bypasses the GI tract? Parenteral, PPN, and TPN
*Halitosis guard against breath odor
*Intake means anything that goes into the body
*Output includes all bodily fluids that are lost including urine, emesis, liquid stool, blood suction, gastric content, and drainage from drainage devices such as HEMO vac and Jackson-Pratt drain

*Too much Potassium can cause a heart attack True
*Residual gastric volume is the amount of formula that still remains after the previous feeding True
*Hypercalcemia means High Potassium
*Hypocalcemia means Low Potassium
*60-90 ml is normal tube feeding True
*200 ml is not normal, turn tube feeding off and contact a physician True
*Straw color gastric fluid is normal True
*Coffee brown emesis is blood True
*Green gastric fluid is bowel True
When inserting a NG tube while patient is lying flat what are the first 3 step performed on the patient? Visualize abdomen, Auscultate 4 quadrants, and Palpate Abdomen
Percuss abdomen? No
Gastric fluid Ph (in the stomach) should be < 5.5 True
Patient sits up no matter what they eat at 60-90 degree True
