Explain what it means (what is being compared to what?) Juliet’s brightness and beauty are being compared to a sparkling diamond against dark skin. It shows how much she stands out in the crowded room.
Define metaphor A figure of speech that directly compares two unrelated things by stating that one thing is another (without using "like" or "as").
Give an example of a metaphor from the play "Juliet is the sun." (Act 2, Scene 2)
Explain what it means (what is being compared to what?) Juliet is being directly compared to the sun. This means she brings warmth, light, and life into Romeo's dark world.
Define personification A type of figurative language where non-human objects, animals, or ideas are given human traits, feelings, or actions.
Give an example of personification from the play: The grey-eyed morn smiles on the frowning night" (Act 2, Scene 3)
Explain what it means (what is being compared to what?) The morning is given the human ability to "smile," and the night is given the human ability to "frown." It describes the transition from darkness to dawn.
