Ch 6 Study Guide

The Circulatory System

TermDefinition
Myocardial Infection heart attack, death of heart tissues
Pulse Rhythmic throbbing caused by blood passing through the artery
Systolic measurement of pressure on the artery as the ventricles are contracted
Diastolic measurement of pressure on the artery as the ventricles are relaxed
Sphygmomanometer Blood pressure cuff, an instrument used in measuring blood pressure. Can be used as tourniquet
Arteries Blood vessels carrying blood away from the heart
Capillaries microscopic vessels that connect arterioles and venules
Lumen internal space of the vein
Valves leaflets of tissue that move blood back towards the heart along vein walls
AC Antecubital - in front of the elbow
Fossa Shallow depression
Embolus Blood clot, part of a blood clot or other undissolved matter circulating in the bloodstream
Embolism Blood vessel obstructed by an embolus
Phlebitis vein inflammation
Thrombophlebitis vein inflammation with thrombus formation
Thrombus blood clot in vessel or organ
Plasma the liquid portion of blood - appx 91% water
Erythrocytes RBC/Red blood cell
Leukocyte white cell
Hemostasis the stoppage of bleeding
Thrombocyte platelet
Atria Upper chambers of the heart to receive blood
Ventricles lower chambers that constrict, pushing blood through the arteries
Pulse only felt in an artery
Blood Pressure measured to determine the amount of force on the arteries as the ventricles contract and relax
Systolic Pressure arteries as ventricles contract
Diastolic Pressure arteries as ventricles relax
Arteries carry blood away from the heart, larger and thicker than veins
Veins carry blood back to the heart, have one-way valves
Proper direction of blood flow arterioles to capillaries to venules
H pattern 70% of population, median cubital, cephalic, basilic
M pattern 30% of population, median vein, median cephalic, medial basilic
Written permission for leg, ankle, or foot veins to be drawn
Erythrocytes most numerous cells, made in bone marrow, have intravascular function, carries oxygen
Leukocytes have intravascular function, capable of diapedesis, slipping through capillaries into tissue, fight pathogens
ABO blood group A, B, AB, O, identified by antigen attached to red blood cell
Serum fluid remaining following the blood clotting and centrifugation, lacks fibrinogen
Serum and plasma look the same
Whole blood used for testing in anticoag tubes, blood is mixed and not centrifuged
Lymph system extends through the body similar to blood vessels, functions as filtration system, removes impurities and delivers fat to bloodstream
Lymph fluid originates from tissue fluid
Lymph nodes (small tissue masses) are removed from under armpits as a part of a mastectomy for the purpose of breast cancer removal
Lymphostasis the stoppage of lymph flow
