Force and Motion
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a force? | A push or a pull acting on an object. Units Newtons |
| Balanced forces | Equal in size and opposite in direction; no change in motion. |
| Unbalanced forces | Not equal; cause a change in motion (acceleration). |
| Net Force | The overall force acting on an object after all forces are combined. |
| What is acceleration? | The rate at which velocity changes over time.( so any change in speed or direction!) |
| How can you tell if something is in motion? | Its position changes relative to a reference point. |
| Speed: | How fast something moves (scalar, no direction). |
| Velocity: | Speed with a specific direction (vector). |
| Speed = | distance (units are m/s) Time |
| Acceleration = | Final velocity - starting velocity (Units are m/s/s) time |
| Velocity = | distance with direction Time (units are m/s) |
| Motion | An object’s position changes when compared to another object |
| Reference Point | A place or object used for comparison to determine whether something is in motion – things that are attached to the Earth make good reference points (like trees, stop signs, buildings) |
| Motion is ? | relative because a reference point can change |
| Contact Force | Force that happens when one object actually touches another (or has contact with it) |
| EX- Contact - | FRICTION / RESISTANCE / APPLIED FORCE |
| Non contact force | Force that happens when you can’t physically see it touching the object |
| EX- Non-contact | MAGNETIC / GRAVITY / ELECTRO |
| An object accelerates when: | The object speeds up The object slows down The object changes direction |
