| Grandfather Clause | A rule that allowed people to vote only in their father or grandfather had voted before the Civil War. |
| Freedmen | Formerly enslaved people who gained their freedom after the Civil War |
| Integration | The bringing together of people of different races in the same schools, workplaces and public spaces. |
| Segregation | The separation of people based on race, often through laws and policies. |
