| Term | Definition |

| Luminosity | the total amount of energy radiated by an object every second. |
| Magnitude | a measure of the brightness of a star |
| Light Year | the distance that light travels in 1 yr (Equals 9.46 x 10^12 km) |
| Star | huge sphere of very hot plasma |
| Nebula | A cloud of dust and gas in space |
| Protostar | A forming star that has not yet reached the point where sustained fusion can occur in its core. |
| Red giant | Large stars that are bright but cooler in temperature |
| White Dwarf | A small, hot, dim star that is the leftover center of an old star |
| Supernova | A gigantic explosion in which a massive star collapses and throws its outer layers into space |
| Neutron Star | Collapsed core of a supernova consisting of a small, extremely dense ball of neutrons |
| Black Hole | Made of matter so massive that nothing ( including light) can escape it's gravity, created when a very massive star explodes |
| Nuclear fusion | The process by which two or more atoms fuse to make an atom of a different element. Hydrogen fuses into helium inside most stars. |

| spectrograph | An instrument that separates light into colors to determine what gases are present in the star |
