Science Final Vocab

TermDefinition
Kinetic Energy Energy in Motion
Potential Energy Stored Energy
Mass The more of this you have the more kinetic energy you have
Claim Restate and answer the problem of the experiment in a full sentence
Quantitative Observation Using numbers from a data table to support your claim
Energy Transfer The first item transfers energy to the second item when they collide the first item would lose energy and the second gains energy
Gravity The force that pulls things toward Earth
Volume The amount of space an object takes up
Density Formula is mass/volume liquids will layer according to their density the biggest density will sink to the bottom and the smallest density will layer on top (WATER has a density of ONE)
Solid Particles are tightly packed and vibrate a little
Liquid Particles take the shape of their container and are more spread out then in a solid
Gas Particles are very spread out and bounce
Evaporation A liquid changes to a gas The sun or heat will do this quicker
Mixture Can be separated by evaporation, magnetism, solubility, and filtration
Filtration Using water and filter paper to separate a mixture. (A mixture of water and sand)
Open System The mass of a substance would change since it is open to the air
Closed System The mass of a substance would not change if it is confined and cannot escape
Conservation of Matter The total number of atoms on the left side of the chemical equation (reactants) must equal the total of number of atoms on the right side of the equation (Products)
Fermal Energy As you add more of this, the temperature will increase and the particles will move faster
Elements Count the capital letters to determine the number of elements in a compound
Coefficient The big number in front of a compound - No number means one molecule
Ball and Stick Model The subscript (Small number after an element) tells the number of atoms of that element. No number means one atom
Chemical Reaction Something new is formed
Magnetism A way of separating a mixture that contains iron filings
Electromagnet Made with a nail, coiled wire, and a battery. One way to increase the strength is by using a higher voltage battery
Trials The more times you do and experiment the more accurate (Reliable) the data will be with less errors
Series Circuit ONE Pathway for electricity to flow. If one bulb goes out the whole circuit goes out. All bulbs will have the same brightness
Parallel Circuit Has MANY pathways for electricity to flow. If one bulb goes out, the rest stays on. Used in buildings, schools, homes, stores.
Endothermic Energy is absorbed. Temperature goes down
Exothermic Energy is released and the temperature goes up
Carbon dioxide and Water Vapor They are both gases
Bar Graph A graph that has bars
Solubility How quickly something dissolves. If you raise the temperature, this will increase

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
