Waves

QuestionAnswer
What 2 things do waves transfer, and what is the 1 thing they don't? They transfer energy and information, but not matter
Give evidence that shows waves do not transfer matter in water. The object will move up and down in a fixed position but not along with the wave
What is wave frequency? The number of waves that pass a given point each second
What is wavelength? The distance between the same points on 2 consecutive waves
What is wave amplitude? The maximum distance a wave moves from the flat line (height)
What does period mean in terms of wave? The time taken for a whole wave to completely pass a single point
What is the formula for wave velocity? v = f ×λ
What is wavefront? The plane in which the wave travels
What are longitudinal waves? Waves in which the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer
What are transverse waves? Waves in which the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
Give 3 examples of transverse waves. Water, electromagnetic waves, seismic S waves
Give 2 examples of longitudinal waves Sound waves, seismic P waves
What is the more simple equation for wave speed? V=x/t (Distance over time)
How do you measure the velocity of sound in air? Have 2 microphones connected to a data-logger and record the time difference between a sound passing from one to the other
How do you measure ripples on water? Move pencil along the paper at the same speed as the wavefront, measure the time taken to draw this line and the length of the line
What is refraction? The change in speed of a wave as it reaches a boundary between 2 media, often changing direction
What 2 things does glass do? Transmits/refracts visible light, reflects UV

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
