Algebraic Vocabulary

Terminology and Vocabulary in Algebra

TermDefinition
pronumeral a letter that represents a number (x,y)
coefficient the number multiplying the pronumeral (3 in 3x)
constant a number with no pronumeral, no letter (2,3)
term the thing itself, anything (3x, 2, y)
expression doesn't have an equals sign
equation has an equals sign
like terms terms with the same pronumerals, the same letters (3x and 5x are like terms)
