5th Grade Fractions

Vocabulary Words for 5th Grade Fractions

TermDefinition
Numerator The top number in a fraction. It represents how many equal parts in a whole you have.
Denominator The bottom number in a fraction. It tells you the total number of equal parts that make up a whole.
Mixed Number A combination of a whole number and a proper fraction.
Unlike Fractions Fractions that have different denominators.
Equivalent Fractions Fractions that have the same value, even though they may look different.
Proper Fraction A fraction where the numerator is smaller than the denominator.
Simplify To rewrite a fraction in its smallest or simplest form.
Common Denominator A shared denominator that helps when adding or subtracting fractions.
Improper Fraction A fraction where the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator.
Unit Fraction A fraction with a numerator of 1.
