Poetry & First Nations Literature + Key Term Glossary
| Term | Definition |

| Speaker | The voice behind the poem |
| Subject | The main thing, person, idea or object the poet is talking about. |
| Tone | The emotion or feeling in the poet's words. |
| Mood | The emotion or feeling the reader gets when reading the poem. |
| Line | Consists of any word arranged in one row. |
| Stanza | A grouping of line (like a paragraph). |
| Enjambment | The continuation of a phrase from one line to another with an end-stop. |
| Caesura | A pause in a line of the poem (at the end of the line or sometimes in the middle). Consists of punctuation marks, questions marks and commas. |
| End-stop. | When a line or stanza ends with a full stop. |
| Symbol | An object or action that stands for something beyond itself. |
| Imagery | Descriptive language that invokes the six senses. |
| Visual | Sight. |
| Auditory | Sound. |
| Olfactory | Smell. |
| Gustatory | Taste. |
| Tactile | Touch. |
| Kinaesthetic | Movement. |
| Allusion | A well-known person, place or event. |
