1800s Westward Expansion

TermDefinition
Manifest Destiny The belief that the United States should spread across North America from coast to coast.
Westward Expansion When settlers moved west to live on new land.
Louisiana Purchase Land bought from France in 1803 that doubled the size of the United States.
Lewis & Clark Expedition A trip to explore new western land and map the area.
Sacagawea A Native American woman who helped guide Lewis and Clark.
Territorial Expansion When the United States added more land to the country.
Oregon Trail A trail settlers used to travel west to Oregon.
Santa Fe Trail A trail used for trade between Missouri and New Mexico.
California Gold Rush A time when many people moved to California to search for gold.
Mexican Cession Land the United States gained from Mexico after a war.
Texas Annexation When Texas became part of the United States in 1845.
Oregon Territory Land in the Northwest that became part of the United States.
Florida Purchase When the United States bought Florida from Spain.
Gadsden Purchase Land bought from Mexico that helped complete the lower part of the United States map.
Monroe Doctrine A warning from the United States telling European countries to stay out of the Americas.
War of 1812 A war fought between the United States and Great Britain.
Andrew Jackson A military hero and president connected to westward expansion.
Indian Removal Act A law that forced Native Americans to leave their homes in the Southeast.
Trail of Tears The forced journey of Cherokee people to western land where many died.
Seminole Wars Fights between the United States and the Seminole people in Florida.
Pioneer A person who moved west to settle new land.
Forty-niners People who went to California in 1849 looking for gold.
Canal A man-made waterway used for boats and trade.
Erie Canal A canal that helped people and goods travel faster.
Steamboat A boat powered by steam that traveled on rivers.
