Conservation of Energy

QuestionAnswer
Give the equation to calculate the change in gravitational potential energy when an object is raised above the ground. ΔGPE= m x g x Δh
What is the equation for Kinetic energy? KE=1/2 x m x v²
What is meant by conservation of energy? Total amount of energy in a closed system remains constant, energy cannot be made or destroyed but can change form
Describe the energy changes within an object moving upwards KE converted to GPE and vice versa
Describe the energy changes within an object moving up KE converted to GPE and also heat if friction
Describe the energy changes within a moving object hitting an obstacle KE converted to sound and KE if obstacle can move
Describe the energy changes within an object being accelerated by a constant force Objects gains KE, whatever is supplying the force is transferred to KE
Describe the energy changes within a vehicle slowing down. KE transferred to heat by friction (brakes)
Describe the energy changes within bringing a water to boil in an electric kettle Electrical energy to thermal
What would it mean if there were no energy transfers in a closed system? There would be no net change to the total energy in that system
How do mechanical processes become wasteful? They dissipate heat energy into the air and cause a rise in temperature
Give 2 ways to reduce waste energy. Lubrication and Thermal insulation
Why do we use lubrication? Less friction and less heat created
Why do we use Thermal insulation? So less heat is lost to surroundings
What would thicker walls in a building mean? Greater thermal insulation
Give 2 ways to increase efficiency. Reducing waste output and Recycling waste output
What are the main energy sources we use on Earth (7) Fossil fuels, nuclear fuel, bio fuel, wind, hydro-electricity, the tides and the sun
What do we use non-renewable energy for? Large-scale energy supplies
Why is renewable energy more important? The finite lifetime of fossil fuels
Give one historical fact about the use of energy resources. In the industrial revolution, fossil fuels became important as it was easy to mine and provided lots of energy
Give a modern fact about the use of energy resources. Renewable energy has become more suitable, technology has had to develop a lot

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
