Big Lots Interview Q

QuestionAnswer
Tell Me About Yourself I’m currently a biology student at App State University, and I’ve been working as a cashier on campus. Outside of work and school, I’m pretty relaxed. I like music, spending time with friends, and honestly just staying productive and keeping busy.
Why do you want to work at Big Lots? I enjoy customer service work and interacting with different people every day. I also like fast-paced environments where there’s always something to do. I think Big Lots would be a good place for me to grow my skills and gain more retail experience.
Why should we hire you? I’m reliable, hardworking, and a fast learner. I already have experience working as a cashier, so I understand the importance of staying professional and friendly even during busy situations. I’m also a team player and willing to help wherever needed.
Tell me about your customer service experience. At my campus cashier job, I regularly helped customers, answered questions, and operated a POS system. That experience taught me how to communicate clearly, stay patient, and solve problems calmly.
How would you handle an angry customer? I would stay calm, listen carefully to the customer’s concern, and try to help solve the issue respectfully. If I couldn’t fix it myself, I would get a manager so the customer feels heard and helped.
Tell me about a time you handled a difficult situation. At my cashier job, there were times when the line became very busy and customers became frustrated with waiting. I stayed calm, worked efficiently, and continued being polite to customers while helping move the line quickly.
What are your strengths? I would say my strengths are being dependable, organized, and calm under pressure. I’m also a good listener and work well with others.
What is one weakness you have? Sometimes I can be a little quiet at first, but once I become comfortable in a work environment, I communicate well and work effectively with customers and coworkers.
How do you handle stress? I try to stay calm and focus on one task at a time. In busy situations, I prioritize what needs to be done while still maintaining good customer service.
Can you work in a fast-paced environment? Yes. My cashier experience taught me how to stay organized and efficient during busy periods while still staying friendly and accurate.
How would your coworkers describe you? I think they would describe me as dependable, respectful, and easy to work with. I try to maintain a positive attitude and help when needed.
Are you comfortable working weekends or holidays? Yes, I understand that retail jobs require flexibility, and I’m willing to work weekends and holidays when needed.
What would you do if you saw a coworker not doing their job? I would focus on doing my own work professionally, but if it was affecting customers or the team, I would respectfully inform a supervisor.
What would you do if a customer asked you something you didn’t know? I would be honest and let them know I’m going to find the correct answer. Then I would ask a coworker or manager for help instead of guessing.
Tell me about a mistake you made. Early on at my cashier job, I made a small mistake during a transaction because I was nervous. I corrected it with help from my supervisor, and it taught me to slow down and double-check my work.
Where do you see yourself in a few years? I see myself continuing to grow professionally, gaining more experience, and improving my skills while continuing my education.
What do you like to do in your free time? I spend a lot of time with school, but outside of that I like listening to music, spending time with friends, and relaxing at home. I also like staying organized and productive, so I usually try to balance downtime with getting things done.
What are your hobbies? I enjoy music, learning new things, and spending time with people close to me. I’m also really interested in biology because that’s what I’m studying, so I spend a lot of time focused on school too.
What kind of person are you? I’d say I’m calm, dependable, and easy to get along with. I can be a little quiet at first, but once I get comfortable, I communicate well and work really well with other people.
How would your friends describe you? They’d probably say I’m reliable and supportive. I’m usually the person people can count on when they need help or need someone calm during stressful situations.
What do you do when you’re stressed? I usually try to stay organized and focus on one thing at a time instead of getting overwhelmed. I also like listening to music or taking a little time to reset so I can stay focused.
What motivates you? I like feeling productive and improving at what I do. I also enjoy helping people and knowing that I’m doing my job well.
Do you have any questions for me? What does training look like for new employees? What are the busiest times for the store? What qualities make someone successful in this role? What do you enjoy most about working here?
