| meter | system for identifying & measuring the rhythmic pattern of a poem |
| iambic meter | a type of meter where unstressed followed by stressed syllables are repeated 5 times |
| scansion | analysis of a poem to determine its meter & length, including feet, rhyme, classification, and # of lines |
| trajedy | a catastrophe happens to the protagonist |
| foil | a character is contrasted with another character |
| irony | the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning |
| exposition | part of story at the beginning that introduces the setting, characters, and basic situation |
| paradox | a statement that seems contradictory but expresses a truth |
| sonnet | ex. Italian |
| free verse | no regular patterns of rhyme, meter, or line length. It relies on natural speech rhythms |
| blank verse | unrhymed poem using Iambic pentameter and having no structured rhyme scheme |
| light verse | mainly to entertain or amuse the reader, such as limericks, Satires, Parodies |
| Narrative poem | Epics or ballads; emphasizes plot or physical action, typically with historical, geographical, or mythical elements |
