Integumentary System
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| What are the skins two layers? | Epiderms and Dermis |
| EPIDERMIS | superficial layer |
| DERMIS | Deep layer |
| HYPODERMIS | Subcutaneous tissue; helps attach skin to bones and skeletal muscle |
| STRATUM CORNEUM | Most superficial layer of the epidermis Most cells are dead and flat;accumulation of KERATIN Impermeable barrier Most bacteria, virsus and water cannot penetrate it. |
| STRATUM BASALE | Deepest layer of the epidermis Cells constantly divinding (germinating), pushing older ces up towards STRATUS CORNEUM |
| KERTINOCYTE | Most commom sell type in the epiderms Accumulates keratin making epidermis waterproof and bacteria and virus resistant. |
| MELANOCYTE | Makes the pigment MELANIN All peope have the same amount |
| DERMIS | Deep to the epidermis Composed of conective tissue with large amounts of collagen fibers |
| SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE aka HYPODERMIS | Made up of adiposer (fat) tissue and loose connective tissue. |
| What are the three skin lesion categories? | Primary, secondary, and vascular |
| PRIMARY LESIONS | Macules and vesicles Originate from disease or body changes |
| SECONDARY LESIONS | Ulcers and keloids Varying causes |
| VASCULAR LESIONS | Anomalies of the blood to inlcude TELANGIECTASIAS, HEMANGIOMAS, ECHYMOSES |
| SEBACEOUS GLANDS | Oil gland found in the derms |
| HAIR FOLLICLES | Tube-like structures in the skin's dermis |
| ARRECTOR PILI MUSCLES | Muscles attached to most hair follicles and found in the dermis |
| What are the two types of sweat glands? | ECCRINE and APOCRINE |
| ECCRINE SWEAT GLANDS | Produces a watery tpe of sweat Most numerous Activated by increase in body temp Located on forehead, back, palms, and soles |
| APOCRINE SWEAT GLANDS | Produces thicker type of sweat Most concentrated where course hair is such as armpit and groin Become active during puberty Primarliy stimulated by nervousness, pain, or emotional stress |
| SEBUM | Oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands |
| LUMULE | Visible, white, hald-moon-shaped area at the base of the nail |
| NAIL MATRIX | Stratum basale surrounding the nail root is thickened forming this |
| EPONYCHIUM | Cuticle;narrow band of dead skin tat overhangs tje proximal edge of the body of nail |
| What happens when blood vessels in the shin vasodilate? | Increases heat loss |
| What contains a variety of tissue types and accesory organs? | DERMIS |
| What is an accesory organ of the skin that is found in the dermis and the sites at which hair emerges? | FOLLICLE |
| OXYGENATED | Having been to the ungs and carrying oxygen in hemoglobin |
| KERATIN | Tough, hard protein contained in skin, hair, and nails |
| What acceory organs other than the skin does the integumentary system consist of? | Nails, hair follicles and skin glands |
| BULLA | Large blister or cluster of blisters; primary |
| PURPURA | Purple-red bruise, usually the result of clotting abnormlaities; vascular |
| TUMOR | Swelling of abnomral tissue growth; primary |
| PETECHIAE | Pinpoint skin hemorrhages resulting from a bleeding disorder; vascular |
| ULCER | Wound resulting from tissue loss; secondary |
| During exercise, the muscles contract, creating a rise in the body temperature, which leads to what? | VASODILATION |
| What layer of the skin is the dermis? | Middle(second) |
| What structures are contained in the dermis? | Sweat glands Arrector pili muscles Collagen Fibers Hair Follicles Sebaceous Glands |
| What are the skins accesory organs? | Nails Hair follicles Sebaceous glands Sudoriferous glands |
| Where are the majority of the sweat glands located? | The DERMIS |
| VASOCONSTRICTION | The blood vessels of the skin constrict, reducing blood flow to its surface, this retaining heat. |
| VASODILATION | The blood vessels of the skin dilate, increasing blood flow to the skin's surface, therefore allowing for heat loss. |
| What tissues are containined in the dermis? | Epithelial, connective, muscles and nervous tissues |
| What structures are contained in the DERMIS? | Hair follicles Sweat glands Sebaceous glands Arrecto pili muscles Collagen fibers |
