Indus River Valley

QuestionAnswer
What is the climate of India? Monsoon winds, warm wet season and a cold dry season. In the summer it rains daily and in the Winter it there is very little rainfall.
What major mountain chain has an impact on India, describe the impact? The Himalayan Mountains, the Himalayas block the cold winter air and keep much of the rain from entering the subcontinent.
What are the monsoons, how do they impact India? The monsoons are the winds, the monsoon winds blow from Central Asia into the Indian Subcontinent.
What three(3) bodies of water border India to the south? Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal.
What are the two major rivers in India? Indus River and the Ganges.
Explain why India’s geography is diverse? India's geography is diverse because it is a subcontinent and separated from the rest of Asia.
What geographic terms are used to describe India? Peninsula, subcontinent, mountains, rivers.
Why is India considered a subcontinent? India is considered a subcontinent because the mountains separate from the rest of Asia.
How do we know that the Indus River Valley Civilization traded? How do we know that the Indus River Valley Civilization traded?
What were the two(2) main cities of the Indus River Valley? Mohenjo-daro and Harappa.
Both cities were protected by a citadel. What is a citadel? A large protective wall
Extra food(surplus) was stored where? This allowed the people of the Indus River Valley to do what? Extra food was stored in a granary. This allowed people to build and make more things and specialize in more jobs.
What were some of the accomplishments of the Indus River Valley? Plumbing, granaries, multi story homes, seals, place value system, sanskrit.
What was the main religion in India? Buddhism
What were the main beliefs of Hinduism? They were polytheistic and believed in 3 main gods, Brahmin, Vishnu, and Shiva. They believed in Reincarnation, the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. They also believed in Karma,
What were the Vedas? The holy books
What were the 3 main gods and what did each represent? Brahmin, Vishnu, Shiva. They represented Brahman: supreme being, shown with 4 faces and 4 arms. Vishnu: preserver of the universe, 9 avatars, Krishna and Rama most famous. Shiva: “destroyer” but seen as a positive force.
