QuestionAnswer
What is the integumentary system? It includes the skin, hair, nails, and glands. It protects the body, regulates temperature, enables sensation, and synthesizes vitamin D.
What are the three main layers of the skin? Epidermis (outer), Dermis (middle), Hypodermis (deepest, mainly adipose tissue).
What is the function of the epidermis? It acts as a protective barrier, prevents water loss, and blocks pathogens.
What are the five layers of the epidermis (deep to superficial)? Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum.
What is the role of melanocytes in the skin? They produce melanin, which gives skin color and protects against UV damage.
What are the two types of sweat glands? Eccrine (watery secretion for cooling) and Apocrine (milky secretion in axillary/anogenital areas.
What is the function of sebaceous glands? They secrete sebum to lubricate and waterproof skin and hair; sebum also has antibacterial properties.
What are the main types of skin cancer? Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma
How are burns classified and treated? First-degree: Epidermis only Second-degree: Epidermis +part of dermis Third-degree: Epidermis +dermis + deeper tissues Treatment: Debridement, antibiotics, coverings or grafts.
