QuestionAnswer
autosome Autosomes are chromosomes that contain genes for characteristics that are unrelated to sex.
human genome All the DNA of the human species makes up the human genome.
Human Genome Project the Human Genome Project, scientists now know the DNA sequence of the entire human genome. The Human Genome Project is an international project that includes scientists from around the world.
linkage map A linkage map shows the locations of genes on a chromosome.
linked genes Genes that are located on the same chromosome are called linked genes.
sex chromosome The remaining pair of human chromosomes consists of the sex chromosomes,
sex-linked gene Genes located on the sex chromosomes are called sex-linked genes.
X-linked gene Strictly speaking, genes on the X chromosome are X-linked genes,
epistasis In other cases, one gene affects the expression of another gene. This is called epistasis.
gene therapy One potential cure that has already been used with some success is gene therapy.
genetic trait Characteristics that are encoded in DNA are called genetic traits.
multiple allele trait Traits controlled by a single gene with morethan two alleles are called multiple allele traits.
nondisjunction Mistakes may occur during meiosis that result in nondisjunction.
pedigree The chart in Figure 2.5 is called a pedigree.
pleiotropy Sometimes a single gene may affect more than one trait. This is called pleiotropy.
sex-linked trait Traits controlled by genes on the sex chromosomes are called sex-linked traits,
X-linked trait Strictly speaking, genes on the X chromosome are X-linked genes,
biotechnology Biotechnology is the use of technology to change the genetic makeup of living things for human purposes.
gene cloning Gene cloning is the process of isolating and making copies of a gene.
genetic engineering Changing an organism in this way is also called genetic engineering.
pharmacogenomics Researchers are beginning to look at how to tailor medical treatments to our genetic profiles, in a relatively new field called Pharmacogenomics.
polymerase chain reaction (PCR) The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) makes many copies of a gene or other DNA segment.
recombinant DNA The DNA that results is called recombinant DNA.
synthetic biology The new field of Synthetic Biology is making biology easier to engineer so that new functions can be derived from living systems.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
