What is feudalism? A give and take relationship between the social classes based on loyalty and protection which created law and order
Why was feudalism created? To create law and order
Responisibilities of a monarch/king -Make laws -Create taxes -provided protection -In charge of army -Gave nobles manors
responsibilities of a noble/lord -protected manor/castle -collected rents -served for the king -decide court cases -punished those who broke laws
Responsibilities of knights Followed code of chivarly protected kingdom protect the weak
Responsibilities of peasants: Produced goods able to leave manor for trade
Responsibilities of serfs: -Work the land/crops -Never leave manor
Stage 1 of a knight- What did he do? Page- Ride a horse Carry messages wait on lords table hunt with a falcon
Stage 2 of a knight- What did he do? Squire- Takes care of horse polish armor goes to battle with knight advanced fighting skills
Stage 3 of a knight- What did he do? Knight- Code of chivalry Oath:protected the weak weak: children, women, elderly.
What is the code of chivalry? Knights promised to provide loyalty and service to the church and the weak:Children, women, elders
Why were castle built? provided protection
Why were manors considered self-sufficient? Produced everything you need such as crops and goods.
What was the main reason the crusades were fought? The Crusades wanted to claim Jerusalm
Define pilgrimage: A religious journey to jerusalam/holy sites
What does the Red cross symbolize? Unity that they were fighting a holy cause to claim Jerusalam.
Why do knights volunteer to fight in the crusades? To show off their advanced fighting skills.
What are 2 positive effects of the Crusades Muslims and christans learned to respect eachother Trade increased on manors and in towns due to spices, silk, and rice.
What are the 2 negative effects of the Crusades Many people on both sides died, including christans and muslims. Christans lost interest because they lost frequent battles.
What caused the towns/cities to grow during and after the Crusades? -They traded: Went to Asia to get spices, silk, and rice -Increase in job oppurtunities
What was a charter? A documented agreement between nobles and townspeople to govern themselves
What was the purpose of a guild? -Controlled hours of work -Set fair prices -Dealt with complaints -Monitor quality of goods
What was the Black death/plague? A deadly disease (epidemic/pandemic) that killed 24-30 million people
How did the Black death spread? rats and fleas carried the disease and it was spread throughout Europe by trade
How did the plague affect the economy (businesses)? -Trade shuts down -Shops shuts down -Towns hardest hit
Why did feudalism come to an end? The plague because it killed millions of people in the towns, therefore, job openings for serfs
Give 4 characteristics of a Nation-State? -Single ruler -Advisors -Permanent army -Written laws
Who supported nation-staes and why? Traders/Merchants: Needed a strong government/army so they could safely carry on trade.
Who didn't support nation-states and why? Nobles: King took power away from Nobles
What did the Magna Carta state? Everyone including the king was not above the law. Making everyone equal.
Who signed the Magna Carta and why did he oppse signing it? king Jogn of england Limits kings power.
