Story Elements

TermDefinition
Characters WHO are experiencing the events in the story These are often people, but they could also be animals or objects with human characteristics.
Setting WHEN and WHERE a story takes place This can include a country, a time period, and/or a specific location. Many stories contain multiple settings.
Plot The main events that take place in the story. Includes: problem, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution
Problem or Conflict The main conflict or issue in the story. A problem can be internal (within a character's mind) or external (something a character must face in the outside world. There can be more than one problem in the story.
Solution or Resolution The way the characters solve, fix, or overcome the problem.
Theme The life lesson that the story conveys or teaches the reader.
Point of View The perspective from which a story is written.
Foreshadowing A literary device used by the author to hint at something that might happen later in the story.
Flashback A literary device used by the author to take a reader back in time to explain an event.
Figurative Language A type of language used by the author that doesn't mean exactly what it says.
