Story Elements
| Term | Definition |

| Characters | WHO are experiencing the events in the story These are often people, but they could also be animals or objects with human characteristics. |
| Setting | WHEN and WHERE a story takes place This can include a country, a time period, and/or a specific location. Many stories contain multiple settings. |
| Plot | The main events that take place in the story. Includes: problem, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution |
| Problem or Conflict | The main conflict or issue in the story. A problem can be internal (within a character's mind) or external (something a character must face in the outside world. There can be more than one problem in the story. |
| Solution or Resolution | The way the characters solve, fix, or overcome the problem. |
| Theme | The life lesson that the story conveys or teaches the reader. |
| Point of View | The perspective from which a story is written. |
| Foreshadowing | A literary device used by the author to hint at something that might happen later in the story. |
| Flashback | A literary device used by the author to take a reader back in time to explain an event. |
| Figurative Language | A type of language used by the author that doesn't mean exactly what it says. |
