constant of variation The constant ratio in a direct variation. It is also called the constant of proportionality.
constant rate of change The rate of change between any two points in a linear relationship is the same or constant.
corresponding parts Parts of congruent or similar figures that are in the same relative position.
direct variation A relationship between two variable quantities with a a constant ratio. A proportional linear relationship.
initial value The starting value in a real-world situation in which an equation can be written. The y-intercept of a linear function.
linear equation An equation with a graph that is a straight line.
linear relationships A relationship for which the graph is a straight line graph.
rate of change A rate that describes how one quantity changes in relation to another quantity.
rise The vertical change between any two points on a line.
run The horizontal change between any two points on a line
similar figures Figures that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size.
slope The rate of change between any two points on a line. The ratio of the rise, or vertical change, to the run, or horizontal change.
slope-intercept form An equation written in the form y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
slope triangles Right triangles that fall on the same line on the coordinate plane.
solution a specific value, number, or set of values that makes a mathematical statement (like an equation or inequality) true.
y-intercept The y-coordinate of a point where the line crosses the y-axis.
